Best suited as a New Hire Program, this four-hour EMS classroom session was designed to complement, supplement and reinforce new paramedics’ knowledge of:

  • the Highway Traffic Act and the Ambulance Act of Ontario
  • Defensive and Cooperative Driving Principles – plan ahead, be seen, and create escapes
  • pre-shift vehicle inspections
  • Emergency Response Driving and “Red Mist” – recognition of internal and external distractions and their effects on driving performance
  • identifying the “Primary Task” and recognizing “Secondary Tasks” and the necessity of managing the driving environment in dynamic situations
  • situation analysis of collision-producing traffic scenarios
  • safe backing techniques
  • time and space management
  • vehicle handling
  • intersection hazards
  • the risk of “Wakes Accidents”
